Language serves as a fundamental instrument of diplomacy, negotiation, and international cooperation. This paper examines the role of the French language in promoting international relations, with particular emphasis on Nigeria’s foreign policy, regional integration, and diplomatic engagements. Adopting a qualitative, descriptive research methodology, the study draws upon academic journals, textbooks, government publications, regional organisation reports, and credible online sources. The study finds that French occupies a unique position in global diplomacy as an official working language of major international institutions, including the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), European Union (EU), and the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF). For Nigeria, an Anglophone country surrounded almost entirely by Francophone neighbours Benin, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon the relevance of French is magnified by geographical, economic, and security realities. French facilitates Nigeria’s participation in regional peacekeeping operations, cross border trade, counterterrorism initiatives, migration management, and multilateral diplomacy. The study also identifies key Nigerian agencies promoting French for diplomatic purposes, including the Nigerian French Language Village (NFLV), the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), alongside international bodies such as the OIF, UNESCO, and Alliance Française. The study concludes that mastering French is a strategic necessity for Nigeria to strengthen its diplomatic influence, economic relations, peacekeeping effectiveness, and soft power projection. It recommends increased investment in French language education, diplomatic training, and cross-cultural communication initiatives to enhance Nigeria’s foreign policy execution and global visibility
