Abstract

In recent times, the right to freedom of religion has suffered increasing hinderances and challenges and has become so difficult to be enjoyed. From government repressive activities to religious rivalry and intolerance, violence and extremism the situation has become worse. Government policies and programs have not helped matters as on daily basis government tend to be breaching the principles of secularism which the laws seem to have provided for. The doctrinal research methodology is adopted in this work; where primary sources such as, statutes and case law and secondary sources including journal articles and textbooks are freely considered. It is the findings of this work that, the primary causes of challenges to freedom of religion are centered on religious intolerances and in a more destructive measure, from religious extremism. This has resulted in violence destruction of lives and properties. It is therefore, among others, recommended that; efforts be made by government at all levels, aim at educating religious adherents and their leaders on the need to tolerate one another and co-exist peacefully
