RESEARCH ON CHINESE CULTURE TEACHING IN CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE AT NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY, AWKA, NIGERIA

Culture affects language learning, influencing their usage and providing context. It is an important part of language teaching content. Without certain cultural factors, language understanding and language use is impossible. In the teaching of Chinese language, the importance of Chinese culture has been widely recognized. However, how to properly integrate culture teaching with language teaching is still a challenge. Chinese learners studying at Confucius Institute in Nigeria are very interested in Chinese culture, but the existing culture teaching is imperfect, and the culture contents taught by the teachers are never enough to meet their learning needs and curiosity about the Chinese culture. How to improve culture teaching in Nigerian Confucius Institutes from the perspective of the students is a topic worthy of research and study. In this research Nigerian Chinese learners are being used as the survey object, and based on reading lots of previous studies, in combination with questionnaires, this thesis is aimed at exploring the interest, understanding and demand of Chinese culture teaching in Nigerian Chinese learners. The author designed a questionnaire on the questionnaire star website and distributed it through the WhatsApp and WeChat software. A total of 127 copies were collected, and they were all valid questionnaires. After the questionnaires were collected, the data were sorted and analyzed using Microsoft Excel software. The conclusions obtained in this study are as follows: Nigerian Chinese learners love the Chinese language and are very interested in its culture, but they do not have a deep understanding of it, and the reason for this includes: at the Nigerian Confucius institute the existing culture teaching system is imperfect and cannot provide learners with a systematic and contextual culture teaching; lack of professional Culture teachers; lack of specialized teaching materials and lack of an ideal teaching environment. Based on the results obtained from this research work, this paper puts forward relevant Chinese culture teaching suggestions, in order to improve the Chinese culture teaching in Nigeria and deepen the students understanding of the Chinese language. 文化是语言教学内容的重要组成部分,没有一定的文化因素,语言理解和语言 运用是不可能实现的。在汉语教学中,中国文化的重要地位已得到广泛认可, 然而教师如何很好地将文化教学与语言教学相结合,仍然是一个挑战。在尼日 利亚孔子学院的汉语教学中,学习者对中国文化很有兴趣,但是现有的文化教 学不完善甚至欠缺,教师教授的文化内容无法满足学习者的需求。如何从学习 者的角度出发,完善尼日利亚孔子学院的文化教学,是非常值得研究的问题。 本文以尼日利亚汉语学习者为调查对象,在大量阅读了前人研究的基础上,通 过调查问卷和访谈的方法,定量分析和定性分析相结合,来探究尼日利亚汉语 学习者对汉语和中国文化的兴趣与了解情况。笔者在“问卷星”网站设计了调查 问卷,通过WhatsApp 与微信软件发放,回收问卷后利用Microsoft Excel 等软 件进行数据的整理和分析,并对4 位汉语教师与6 位汉语学习者进行访谈。本 次研究得到的结论如下:尼日利亚汉语学习者热爱汉语,对中国文化很有兴 趣,可是接触它的机会有限、对其了解不深,原因在于:现有的文化体系不完 善,不能给学习者提供系统的文化教学;缺乏专业的文化教师;缺乏教授中国 文化的专门教材与理想的授课环境。针对研究所得到的结果,本文提出相关文 化教学建议,以期为改善尼日利亚的中国文化教学提出有价值的建议。
