ÉTUDES EN TERMINOLOGIE MÉDICALE: UN GLOSSAIRE BILINGUE (ANGLAIS-FRANÇAIS) DES TERMES LIÉS À LA TUBERCULOSE

Abstract

This study is aimed at producing a bilingual (English- French) glossary of key medical terms related to tuberculosis (TB), with a view to facilitating accurate communication in clinical, educational, and public health settings, particularly in Francophone and Anglophone contexts. Based on authoritative sources, including the Canadian TERMIUM PLUS, terminology database and the Canadian Public Health glossary for TB. The study identifies core terms such as “tuberculosis” (tuberculose), “multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB)” (tuberculose multi-resistante), "airborne infection isolation room” (chambred’isolement des infections aéroportées), “Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC)” (complexe Mycobacterium tuberculosis), and “contact” (contact), providing precise definitions in source language and translating them into the target language. Thus, the glossary not only includes direct translations but also contextual definitions tailored to TB epidemiology, diagnostic criteria, and public health protocols. By standardizing these terms, the work supports multilingual healthcare professionals, translators, and researchers in achieving clarity and avoiding ambiguity. Future expansion could include comprehensive terminology for treatment regimens, drug- resistant strains (such as XDR-TB), and related symptoms or laboratory procedures, this bilingual glossary therefore represents an essential reference tool for improving tuberculosis-related communication, training, and documentation across English and French-speaking healthcare environments.
