RETHINKING INDUSTRIAL PACKAGING: AN EXPLORATION OF SUSTAINABLE AND FUNCTIONAL DESIGN SOLUTIONS FOR PRODA AND INNOSON IN ENUGU STATE
Abstract
This research examines the challenge of poor product design for packaging within select industries in Enugu State, Nigeria. It investigates how a lack of effective package design hinders products from conveying crucial information, attracting customers, and competing in local and international markets. Through a mixed-methods approach, including surveys, interviews, direct observation, and studio exploration, this study evaluates current design packaging in two selected industries (PRODA and Innoson, Enugu). The findings indicate that 93% of respondents believe high-quality packaging is essential for product success, directly impacting consumer perception, market value, and export potential. This research proposes an intervention based on these findings, demonstrating how professionally designed packages can revitalise a product's image and increase its market value. The study concludes that industries in Enugu State must prioritize employing qualified graphic designers to ensure their products meet the high standards required for both domestic and international markets. Ultimately, improved packaging design can lead to higher demand, increased production, and economic growth for these industries.
