A SYNERGY OF ULI TRADITIONAL MOTIFS INSPIRED BATIK AND AFRICAN WAX-PRINTED FABRICS FOR CONTEMPORARY FASHION
Abstract
In the fashion world today, indigenously produced batik bearing different motifs has been used to construct some clothing. On the other hand, African printed fabrics have also been used extensively in contemporary fashion to produce some wear for different occasions. Nevertheless, a combination of the two has not been given adequate attention in the fashion scene in Nigeria. Therefore, this paper experimented with a combination of batik (decorated with Uli traditional motifs) and African wax-printed fabrics to produce some apparel for contemporary fashion. It examined the cultural significance and developed sustainable fashion designs that promote the cultural heritage of Africans. This study employed the use of studio exploration as the research design. The results of this research are a collection of fashion designs that showcase the beauty and cultural significance of batik, Uli motifs and African wax print. This study contributes to the preservation and promotion of the African Cultural heritage, especially the Igbo, through fashion designs, education, and empowering African fashion designers and artisans. The research presents a unique perspective on sustainable and ethical fashion practices, enriching the fashion industry with diverse and meaningful designs that celebrate African culture. The researcher finds out that people rarely combine batik with African wax-printed fabrics, but this study exposes the importance and beauty of this synergy.
