Abstract

Background: Trainee health professionals play a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare delivery. Understanding their
interests, perceived benefits, and opportunities is crucial for optimizing their training and enhancing their contributions to the
healthcare system. This study examines the interest, benefits, and opportunities among Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) trainee
professionals regarding efficient health service delivery at Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional survey conducted among MLS students at Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin. A questionnaire designed by the authors was administered to third- to fifth-year students, exploring their interest, benefits, and opportunities as trainees in the medical profession. Results: The survey revealed that, a little above average (66%) choose to be a trainee in MLS due to passion to serve humanity, while (52%) value workshops opportunities from the association body at student level, some (64%) requires moral support or benefits to continuing their education in their area of interest. Most of the trainees (94%) are interested in postgraduate studies to acquire more knowledge to save lives. Moreover, many (78%) support continuous interactive seminars to boost their confidence and improve their performance in the near future. Conclusion: The study highlights the need for more workshop opportunities and moral support to sustain the interest of the trainees. We therefore recommend that trainees be encouraged to further their education to the postgraduate level and be exposed to more workshops and seminars during their undergraduate training, enabling them to fulfill their purpose of providing an
efficient health service delivery.
