LA PROSTITUTION DANS CÉLANIRE COU-COUPÉ DE MARYSE CONDÉ: LEÇONS POUR LE NIGÉRIA

Abstract

This paper, though rooted in literature, reflects a translated critical analysis of the occurrence of the theme of Prostitution in Maryse Conde’s Célanire cou coupé, exposing the lessons it holds for Nigeria. The original text is studied in French, translated entirely behind the scene into English, and the implications of the process are reported alongside other details of the present study in French. Through the translation process, the study offers us, its authors, the apparently camouflaged benefit of exploring the linguistic, cultural and stylistic challenges of the translation of the features of the delicate theme of Prostitution from the source language to the target language. By analyzing the key passages related to the theme, it highlights how literature can, through translation, influence the understanding of complex social issues, such as the marginalization and exploitation of women. The paper equally interrogates the role of translated literature in creating awareness about universal problems, taking into account cultural specificities of each context. Finally, it draws lessons from Conde’s work to tackle similar challenges in Nigeria’s socio-cultural context, as its thrust.
