Practical Approaches to Choral Rehearsals: A Case Study of Vocomotion Chorale Awka

Abstract

Choral ensembles in Nigeria frequently struggle to maintain consistent artistic standards due to ineffective rehearsal structures, weak vocal coordination, poor diction, and limited ensemble cohesion. These challenges are often rooted in unplanned rehearsal processes, varying levels of musicianship among singers, and the absence of clear pedagogical frameworks. This study investigates the rehearsal practices of Vocomotion Chorale Awka, a professional ensemble known for its high musical standards and longevity. Using a qualitative approach comprising participant observation and an in-depth interview with the ensemble’s director, the study identifies the practical rehearsal techniques that have sustained the group’s excellence for over twelve years. Findings reveal that Vocomotion Chorale’s success is anchored in a structured yet flexible rehearsal model that integrates goal-oriented planning, sectional learning, individualised vocal development, and a blend of formal discipline with an informal, creativity-enhancing atmosphere. The conductor’s leadership style, characterised by empathy, humour, and human sensitivity, further strengthens ensemble cohesion and performance readiness. The study recommends that Nigerian choral directors adopt adaptive rehearsal frameworks that prioritise both musical technique and human management. Such approaches can significantly enhance rehearsal efficiency, ensemble confidence, and overall performance quality.
